Last Thursday I took my first semester finals. Overall, I think it went well. I had four tests to take: Intro to Vet Tech, Animal Anatomay and Physiology 1, Biology, and Medical Math. I had Sylvan Learning Center in Ponte Vedra Beach to proctor my exams.
My first test was Biology. You only have 1 hour to take the test and I ended up running out of time. All the questions require short essay answers and normally I am a fast test taker. I left a couple blank that I didn't get to, but I thought the questions were pretty fair.
The next test I took was AA&P and again, I ended up running out of time. Just like with biology, I thought the questions were fair. Some of them were rather difficult and I just couldn't remember certain areas.
My 3rd test was Medical Math and I had a 100 average going into the final, so I was the least worried about this one. Boy, was I wrong. This was by far the most difficult test. The questions I felt were difficult and tricky. It took a long time to do all the questions on here because a calculator is not allowed. So a lot of my time was spent just doing the simple math, and I ran out of time trying to finish the test.
My last test of the day was Intro to Vet Tech. This one I believe proved to be the easiest and the only test I was able to finish on time.
I am now waiting for my exams to get graded and move on to Semester 2.
Once I get my grades back, I will let you know how I did.

How long is your program? I joined an accelerated vet tech program and am starting to wonder about the quality of education I'm actually getting. So I've been asking other vet tech students about their programs.
ReplyDeletehi RJ, i've been checking on your blog to see how your first exams were. congrats on finishing them! i'm really surprised they don't let you use a calculator. every math class i've ever taken lets you use one. from what i've read, a lot of people run out of time on the tests due to the time it takes to write everything out and not being able to use a computer. i'm almost done with Restraint and Handling but i'm already sweating the exams at the end of the semester! :) i hope you did well, i'm looking forward to your next entry to see how you did.
ReplyDeleteHi Mari,
ReplyDeleteIt is a 2 yr program. However, the studies are done at your own pace and you can take up to 1 year per semester. There are 4 semesters. Where do you go now? If you want more information, let me know.
Thank you Cindi....Intro to Vet to Tech was my favorite course from first semester. The video they send with your Restraint and Handling books is a good video so make sure you watch it. :-)
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteRJ, i was happy to see the DVD when i opened the package. i've already watched it and took the exam and i'm now in History and Phys Exam.the Medical Terminology book came with this package also. yikes! :O
ReplyDeleteI never opened the Medical Terminology book. I really should do that now as I am waiting for my grades. Thanks for reminding me. :-)
ReplyDeletehey RJ I just finished graduating from high school about 3 weeks ago and the community college around my area seems like they dont care about the students when they are teaching. One of my moms friends goes the community college and says its a pain in the butt cause you basically get no REAL help while in class. So do you think that the distance Penn Foster classes would be good for me? I have a passion for helping animals but i dont know if this would be a better choice then going to an actual college that simply doesnt care and is the only college in the NYC area with the Vet Tech program.
ReplyDeleteHi Jessie. If you are looking for a school that offers help with your class material, I don't think distance learning would be a good choice. The reason i say that is because you are really on your own.....you study on your own, learn on your own, etc. There isn't any one-on-one time to talk to a teacher. Did you look on AVMA's site for a list of accredited schools? there are a few in new york, not sure if they are near you or not.
ReplyDeletehi rj! congrats on getting thru semester 1... i am also in penn foster & in the middle of my biology book. i was wondering if u had bio as an open book test during the proctor exams? i had read on the forums many times that it was open book but u did not mention that part. u got thru bio way quicker than i am able to, but i took into consideration from ur background info that u were once studying to be a veterinarian in a college.so u prob. had a better idea of what to expect. i struggle in genetics..ALOT.
ReplyDeleteBiology is Open Book. Only classes that start with the class code VET are closed book.
ReplyDeleteI entered college wanting to be a vet, but never took classes towards it. I went into business instead...HUGE mistake. But I only took one BIO class in college and that was 15 years ago.
Here's my advice to you in biology....don't try to memorize every little detail about it. Just understand the basics. Before you take the proctor, mark your pages and know where things are in the book. The important stuff you will cover again in A&P. And since that test is closed book, study that one more. Also, take your time on all course exams during the semester and get good grades on them. This makes taking your finals way less stressful.
I am enrolled in Penn foster and about to take my first proctor exam, I just finished all my exams required for semester one. I am so nervous I have been on the forum and reading that classmates have studied the objectives, the self check questions, and the exam questions... and that they felt those questions were no where to be found on any of the tests. Now I feel like I am studying all the wrong things and I'm not sure where to go study wise.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on doing so good with your studies
Hi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteHonestly, don't listen too much to some people on the forum. It's not that bad. Yes they are difficult and pretty long, but relax and study. Remember some are open book and that it's 1/3 of your grade so as long as you did well in your class exams, you could still bomb the proctor and still pass the class.
Good luck to you!
What was the A&P exam like? I'm currently studying for my proctored exams and I want to know how to study. Was A&P also essay or short answer?
ReplyDeleteSeems like forever ago. But from what I remember, make sure you know your systems very well. How does blood flow? Stuff like that. And yes, it was short answer.
